PS#036: 2023 First Half Recap

Alright folks, we are a little more than halfway through the year (a bit scary how quickly time flies).

This newsletter (and more so this community) has taken off in ways I never would’ve expected. I’ve watched members break into venture, make their first investments, share deals, and pull each other up into this industry. It’s been awesome.

From a statistical perspective, this community has grown by nearly 3x since the start of the year with new members joining every week. I couldn’t be more grateful and excited.

With that being said, we have had a lot of new faces join over the past few months, so I thought I would do an organized recap (by category) of the topics I’ve covered.

You’ll want to bookmark this one.

But, before I go any further, I just want to say thank you.

Thank you to all of you who have joined and engaged with me on this journey. If this was a one-sided conversation, I’m not sure I would’ve kept going, but your engagement makes all of this a lot more fun.

Please keep sending your ideas, topics, questions, and of course deals this way!

Without further ado, let’s recap the past year…

Breaking into venture.

This section is all about breaking into the venture capital industry.

Alongside my course How to Land a VC Internship, this is a great starter kit.

I’ve included all of my articles on outreach tactics, interview questions, compensation guidelines, internship approaches, decision factors, and much more.

VC firm operations.

Another topic that I’ve started to cover has been the operations behind venture capital firms, the inner workings of the day-to-day and how venture portfolios are managed.

This will give you a better sense of what to expect when joining a VC firm, whether as an intern or full-time.

The investment process.

Of course, a big piece of the posts cover the investment process.

This is the foundation for any venture capital firm and/or investor. A good process is essential to long-term success in this industry. If you’re looking to learn the process end-to-end (maybe in advance of an internship or new role), check out my course How to be a VC Associate.

In the meantime, check out these articles on the different steps in the process.

Valuation & structure.

When it comes to venture valuations and investment structures, I’ve tried to pull back the curtain and give a more in-depth look at how investors think about these two components. There’s a lot more to cover here (and I plan to), but this will give you a good starting point.

If you’re looking for valuation models and templates, again check out my course How to be a VC Associate. I provide a financial model, cap table, and returns analysis all as a part of the course. They include the level of functionality you’ll need to really do the work.

Side note: I plan on creating a course to go into the more advanced aspects of structuring and valuation, inclusive of models, templates, step-by-step guidelines, etc. Would this be of interest? If so, shoot me an email and I’ll include you on the first release.

Again, thank you all for being a part of this community. I’m excited to keep building in the second half of 2023. If you’re new and haven’t reached out, please do! And as always, if you have any questions or topics that you’d like me to cover, please feel free to send them my way.
